Could my HVAC "Heating & Cooling" System be the reason I am sick a lot?

As a 30 year HVAC experienced Tech GURU, we have seen it all when it comes to going in different peoples homes and seeing how people live, I could write a book about it.
It really is amazing to me how people don't pay attention to what's in their home, what they bring into their home, or how they don't relate their health problems to their home.
So the BIG Question is, can your Home be the reason why you are sick or even keeping you sick.
Yeah, an HVAC system can absolutely have a hand in making you sick — not because the machine itself is “poisonous,” but because of what it moves, harbors, or fails to control. In most homes it comes down to three buckets:
1. Air quality issues
-
Mold and mildew – A neglected system with clogged filters, dirty coils, or poor drainage can grow mold in the ducts or air handler. Breathing those spores can trigger allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues.
-
Dust, dander, and pollen buildup – If filters aren’t changed and ductwork isn’t cleaned when needed, the system just circulates irritants over and over.
-
Combustion byproducts – A cracked heat exchanger in a furnace can leak carbon monoxide, which is life-threatening.
2. Chemical or material exposure
-
Older HVAC insulation or duct tape mastic may contain asbestos, and some older components had harmful chemicals. Not an issue in most modern systems unless you disturb those materials during repairs.
-
Refrigerants aren’t healthy to inhale directly, though that’s more of an acute hazard than a cancer-causing one.
3. Indirect, long-term health risks
-
Chronic poor ventilation can trap indoor pollutants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning supplies, paints, or off-gassing furniture.
-
Radon buildup (a known cancer risk) can worsen in tightly sealed, poorly ventilated homes. The HVAC system’s design and fresh air intake play a role here.
-
Particulate matter from gas appliances or nearby pollutants can stay indoors longer if your system doesn’t filter well. Over decades, high exposure to fine particulates is linked to heart and lung disease, and some cancers.
So the system itself isn’t usually the cause, but if it’s neglected, broken, or poorly designed, it can help create the kind of environment where illness takes root.
